My County Council responsibilities during the past 12 months included:

1.  Chairman of Transport and Environment Scrutiny Committee.  Two Project Boards were established: one to review Street Lighting that was successfully concluded; the other is to review a very important aspect of Waste Management scrutinising the effectiveness of a countywide household waste recycling programme.

Another project that is likely to be undertaken by this particular Scrutiny Committee will deal with Unadopted Roads.

2.   Member of the Audit and Best Value Scrutiny Committee within which I was Chairman of a Project Board that conducted a Best Value Review of Family Support Services concentrating upon those services provided by the Children and Families Division Fieldwork Teams, Child Protection Services and Family Resource Centres.  This was successfully completed in March , wide ranging recommendations are being addressed and a follow up interim report will be made back to the original Scrutiny Committee in December

3.  Chairman of the Chairmen of the 5 Scrutiny Committees

4.  Board member of the Ashdown Forest Conservators and committee member of the Finance and General Purposes committee.

5.  County Council's  nominee to sit on Board of Wealden Federation of Voluntary Organisations

The County’s Scrutiny role has evolved in recent years and one of the main purposes of Scrutiny is to concentrate upon efficient delivery of core services.  In addition, Scrutiny Committees need to hold Cabinet (a decision making committee) to account and also to contribute towards policy development.

My current responsibilities: Although I have retained my involvement with the Transport and Environment Scrutiny Committee, Wealden Federation of Voluntary Organisations and the Conservators of Ashdown Forest, I came to the conclusion during last winter that the main reasons for my standing for re-election as a County Councillor were not being fulfilled to my satisfaction.

The greater majority of my time was being spent on very worthwhile countywide projects but it was diverting me away from issues that had a direct bearing on Crowborough.

My pledge to local residents in June 2001 was to focus upon doing my best to serve, represent and promote Crowborough and its residents within a County context, working for the town's best interests. I gave up the Chairmanship of Scrutiny and membership of Audit and Best Value Scrutiny and am spending more time on local issues now but not forgetting my commitment in any way to the County Council.
